About Me

Alright, I was going to try and put my fancy professional bio but how about we lay this out nice and simply with ten facts about me. Ten's a good round number, right?

1. My name's Zeb Granger. Well, it's not. But as you'll understand from point 3, it's best to keep my writing and work separate.

2. I'm a writer. I've been writing plays, books and screen projects since my teen years. Within that is three self-published superhero novels in my early twenties; three plays in the UK, and twelve plays produced in Melbourne, Australia, mainly speculative fiction and to high praise; and the occasional screen project. Again, none of those you'll be able to find because Zeb Granger is a new name due to point 3.

3. Outside of my writing, I'm a youth worker. I work with twelve to eighteen year olds in schools, specifically those at risk of homelessness or disengagement from school. Most of them are coming from abusive homes in some shape or form and I get the honour of building trust with these amazing young people and helping them shape their lives into what they want them to be. I love my job. I adore every young person I work with. And it's emotionally and mentally exhausting. As you can imagine, it's become common place to have parents in particular make threats when you empower their children to set boundaries and sometimes even leave home. Point 1  makes more sense now, right?

4. I'm neuro-spicy, as are my two daughters. I'm late to the table with being diagnosed but 90% of my personality seems to stem from my ADHD and ASD. Do I remember what you said on July 18th 2008? Yep. Do I remember where I left my snapback or shoes last night? Nope, I do not. But more importantly, let me overshare with you for two hours straight about everything and nothing, and then disassociate all night from social burnout...

5. I'm originally from the UK, but moved to Australia in 2015. I met my Australian wife working in London when she was travelling. She decided to bring me back rather than an overpriced keychain. Seemed cheaper at the time for her. Then she saw that partnership visa price... yikes.

6. I write fantasy and speculative fiction. Particularly, comedic. My sense of humour is most definitely British. It's dark, it's tongue-in-cheek, and is quintessential neuro-divergent. No fluff, no BS, just quick wit, sarcasm, silly at times, but always committed to seeing the joke to the end.

7. I'm a passionate advocate for mental health and exploration of dark subjects. I love fantasy, but I adore when those stories reflect humanity in its raw and vulnerable states.

8. My novel, Ogres, Elves & Insufferable Dad Jokes, is out now for sale on Amazon. It's the first in a series of books. It's funny. It's heartfelt. It's creative. I've spent over two years reworking that rubik's cube of a story. It once was a parody of fantasy video games where the shopkeeper spends his days reluctantly buying broken chairs and old plates that people have looted on missions. Now, it's a completely different and fleshed out world and story, following a father who is clearly neurodivergent and spends his time trying hard to be an awesome dad to two young girls and being a sassy bugger to anyone and everyone, all whilst loving and supporting his wife, trying to make a positive difference in the world, and struggling with his mental health. They say write what you know, after all.

9. I'm in the process of launching a creative writing coaching program for young writers, named Next Draft. Combining my youth work with my creative writing, the project will support young writers aged 13 - 21 from coming up with an idea, finding their voice, establishing routines and habits, editing, marketing, and then self-publishing. There will be a focus on those from disadvantaged backgrounds or struggling with their mental health in some way. For more information, check out nextdraft.com.au.

10. I've recently completed a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing from University of Melbourne, and then got accepted to do a Masters in Creative Writing, but won't be taking it at this time as baby number three just arrived. We are now outnumbered. Please send help.
